The Smoaks began their missionary work as AIMers in Kenya in 1986. After receiving full appointment to Tanzania in 1988, they were actively involved in various evangelism initiatives, church planting, and developing leaders. They also provided Bible school instruction, with a focus on training Tanzanian pastors to teach and manage the three Bible schools. Brother Smoak is an advisor to the national boards of both Tanzania and Burundi. This last term saw the Tanzanian church nationalized with an elected national superintendent. Brother Smoak was appointed as the Area Coordinator for the seventeen nations of East Africa in 2016. His wife, Pamela, faithfully served beside him until her passing in July 2024. She was instrumental in coordinating the translation of materials into Swahili, ladies ministry, and much more. Returning to the field, Brother Smoak will continue advising and encouraging the leadership of East Africa and the long-term advancement of all the Bible schools, as well as continuing literature translation.
